Oh-so clever, this brilliantly pointed, witty and wise slice of science fiction feels startlingly unique and yet somehow already established and familiar as it points out both the ridiculous and wonderful sides of what it is to be human. The Grand Abeona Hotel acts as a magnet to those seeking luxury, and then there are the staff employed to cater to every whim, who call the hotel home as it travels to different planets and systems. Author Grace Curtis has set smaller stories to nestle in amongst the whole, offering complete snapshots of understanding and yet opening questions and queries on which to ponder. There is a mystery, or number of mysteries on offer here, which tease and twist and turn as they take you by the hand and lead you on. Not every question is answered, not every story has a happy ending, which ensured I fell even more deeply in love with this novel and had to award Floating Hotel a LoveReading Star Book as well as a Liz Pick of the Month. The sense of place is superb, the characters are wonderful studies of humanity, differences are celebrated, diversity feels established. I found friends with whom I empathised and commiserated. I observed others with sadness, and found hope and jubilation as I got to know those on board. Highly recommended, Floating Hotel is a triumph of observation and deserves to fly.
