"The foreboding ending left me with chills. I think that this is a really interesting read for horror fans."
The dead rise again and carry on like nothing happened in this creepy, thrilling zombie story. What happens when people rise from the dead and continue their life as normal. Not your usual animalistic, cannibal zombies, The Patience of the Dead shows a less gory and yet all the more disturbing iteration of the horror character. Are ‘The Returned’ the same people, or monsters wearing a familiar face as they return to work? The sudden occurrence collapses civilization as one would expect in a zombie uprising and we follow Nina’s escape from the city with her partner Marcus and onwards as she has her daughter Alice. I liked this twist on the popular horror theme, the mundane nature of the Returned introduces ethical and moral questions initially - they aren’t attacking anyone so would destroying them be right? And the Returned wearing an unchanged face adds more emotional conflict to the dilemma. I liked the timespan used for The Patience of the Dead, from the initial outbreak through Nina and Marcus’ life early on and later on with Nina and then Alice as she grows into an adult. Jumping backwards and forwards in time gave me some indication of what may come a little later down the line, and worked to keep me engaged and reading to see when the timelines would merge and what would happen after. The multiple perspectives of Nena, Alice and James adds more depth and perspective to the novel. The foreboding ending left me with chills. I think that this is a really interesting read for horror fans.

On one world-shattering morning, all around the globe, everything changes.
On that day, and every day thereafter, everyone who dies opens their eyes again an hour later. These are not shambling monsters, rather they wake claiming to be the same person they were before. Many believe ‘The Returned’ are their beloved friends or relatives. More believe they are abominations which must be destroyed.
In truth, nobody knows and only one thing is certain – every day there are more of them.
