What a tale, I have fallen head over heels for these characters, their world, and this story, so let me climb a few rooftops to shout about it. I was immediately consumed by this epic tale of prophecy, war, and love, it starts with a narrow focus and continues to expand, I am officially obsessed! The first in The Burning Empire series begins with a prophecy for two women, the augurs are unable to tell which of the two the prophecy refers to, however one will obtain victory over the other for their people, the Cedrae and the Talusar, who are in direct conflict. Now I love a map, and the one contained within the first few pages made me stop and stare, it’s clever and immediately set me in place. Author Veronica Roth has created the most fascinating of worlds, and a connection formed for me that continued to grow. She cleverly sets up the before and the prophecy before spinning the tale forward. The main characters were oh-so real to me as I fell into the pages, in fact, all of the characters have a vital energy that lives, that ensures the story in turn feels as though it is alive. One thing to note is that violence, death, and grief keep you company, these people are at war. A number of differing threads run through the story challenging you to keep up, each matters, each forms a fascinating part of the whole. It of course sits as both a Liz Pick of the Month and a LoveReading Star Book. I cannot wait to see what comes next, while a complete tale, it is beautifully set up to continue.
