Readers will be on a wild ride from start to finish in Mimik, a German thriller by Sebastian Fitzek.

Hannah Herbst, Germany’s most experienced facial expression expert, learns that she needs to solve the mystery of her family’s murder, but there’s a big problem: she’s watching herself confess to the crime on video, and she has no memory of anything.

Readers will be piecing together the mystery at the same time as Herbst. Meanwhile, can Herbst’s account be trusted? Or can she trust any of the people who claim they will help her?

Be forewarned: the body count is high, and Fitzek doesn’t shy away from gruesome scenes. Much like watching a horror film, on more than one occasion, I thought, “Don’t do that!” There are attempted escapes, pools of blood, dark cellars and precarious situations. Even so, I raced through the pages, wanting to find out what happened.

Readers should prepare themselves for the emotional roller coaster ride of the first three scenes in the novel. Just when you think the novel is about to start, it switches to another highly dramatic scene. But hold on tight. This is a good indicator of what it will be like to read the rest of the novel.

This is the 13th novel from Fitzek, Germany’s best-selling novelist, having sold more than 19 million copies worldwide. He knows how to ratchet up the tension for readers and get them to turn the pages quickly. Fans of Jo Nesbo and Stieg Larsson will love this.
