An absolute stunner of a read, which sits as a fabulous standalone, but nudges perfection when joined to the Dogs of War series. This series is one of the most immersive I have read, it is all too easy to compare the books to our current reality yet it roars into a science fiction future of bioforms and Martians. In Bee Speaker, a distant call for help is heard on Mars, a planet colonised and engineered for survival. Author Adrian Tchaikovsky spins out a universe while narrowing the focus to the individual characters, so it is at once immense and also as intimate as can be. I so admire his imagination, it stuns me every time I step foot into his worlds. As I read, my senses were fully involved, the action-packed scenes played out across my mind, and I believed. This future is not only plausible, it feels totally and justifiably real. The bioforms are written so that even as they appear as an alien concept, my feelings were caught, came into play, and ensured I cared about each of the characters. I found myself ambushed by the humour, taking sides as my thoughts and feelings were flipped, and living life through each turn of the page. This just had to join our LoveReading Star Books collection, and also sits as a Liz Pick of the Month, yes I absolutely loved it! Pointed and oh-so smart, Bee Speaker is adept at recognising the ridiculous nature of humanity while existing in the most epic of sci-fi futures. Highly recommended.
