This breathtaking tale of dungeons, monsters galore, and one very resilient human child hits in wonderfully unexpected ways. When Bait was a baby she was stolen by a dragon and that should have been the end of her, however she was saved by a gargoyle and raised by a hoard of goblins. As Bait grows up a minotaur and talking skull encourage her humanity and she sets out to regain what has been lost, however monsters aren’t always where you’d expect to find them. Author Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan delivers the most compelling of tales, his world building is on point, the plot thrums with tension and wit, and the characters are simply unforgettable. The stand out though is the way he turns the expected on its head and inserts empathy and compassion. Bait is a remarkable character in a story celebrating the unusual, she has carved out a space in my heart and will remain there. This is a story that delivers, and I believe would appeal to D&D and traditional epic fantasy fans looking for a unique slice of charm served in a coming of age story with a difference. The Dungeon Book deserves a huge round of applause as it tells a wonderfully engaging story of resilience and friendship within a monstrous setting, highly recommended!

Bait doesn't remember a time before the dungeon, before the dragon stole her from her cot. She doesn't know what her name was before she was handed over to the monstrous denizens of the dungeon beneath the sorcerer's tower. Luckily for Bait, they decided not to eat her.
