Detective Thingy Majiggy sees Cecelia Ahern set up her joyously original, emotionally resonant new series in fabulous style. While Mia’s unique talent takes young detective fiction into new territory, Katie Saunders’ exuberant illustrations further enhance the book’s appeal for its intended for 7+-year-old readers.

As for Mia's talent, she reveals it through an intriguing opening confessional; “My name is Mia. I’m ten years old and I have a secret...Are you ready? I can speak to inanimate objects... Everybody can speak to inanimate objects, though, so that’s not the weird part. The odd thing is that objects speak to me”. Establishing her uniquely engaging voice, Mia then addresses her readers directly: “if you’re wondering what I can possibly do with this skill, then keep reading”.

What follows is an amusing, inventive, stirring story that begins when Mia moves to live with her new foster mother, Detective Lucy, a day Mia declares to be “the happiest day of my life” because being with Detective Lucy “makes every new day even better than the last one”. Soon after, during her first nervy day at a new school, a classroom fire sees Mia almost become embroiled in very hot water when she’s initially blamed for starting the fire. Inspired by a comment from Toaster, and in the light of lovely heart-to-heart with Detective Lucy, Mia sets about solving the mystery of how the fire started.

As well as being a fun detective story for 7-9-year-olds, Detective Thingy Majiggy is beautifully moving, such as when Mia shares early on that, “All of my friends are objects. I understand objects and they understand me. They don’t think I’m weird for being able to hear them”. In addition, themes of non-traditional families, being kind, finding friends and finding confidence are gently woven into the mystery. Balancing child-centred storytelling with an astute handling of complex emotions, this is young fiction at its best.
