LoveReading Says
The novel that pretty much invented the submarine espionage thriller. Tom Clancy’s 1984 yarn introduces us to CIA analyst Jack Ryan, called into action when renegade Soviet submarine captain, Marko Ramius, decides to go AWOL with a fully armed nuclear ballistic missile sub. While the US navy top brass are convinced that Ramius is headed towards the States in order to wreak nuclear havoc, young Ryan has an alternate theory: perhaps the Russian commander wants to defect? So begins a terrific cat and mouse narrative, where the technical details of submarine engineering are elevated to the status of high prose. It was the dedication to military accuracy that made the book, which originally earned a paltry advance of $5000, instantly popular with the US military and had even American President Ronald Reagan enthusing, ensuring the book became a huge bestseller.

About Tom Clancy
Thirty years ago Tom Clancy was a Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history. Years before, he had been an English major at Baltimore’s Loyola College and had always dreamed of writing a novel. His first effort, The Hunt for Red October, sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto the New York Times bestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it “the perfect yarn.” From that day forward, Clancy established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013.
