Sarah Broadhurst's view...

This is an interesting series of which there are 20 so far so lots to get hooked into. They are police procedural stuff with a difference for they are set in 2058. I think they are great. Easy escapist fun with a sassy female detective, Eve Dallas, lots of blood and emotions, they carry you through tight plots at a swift pace.

Comparison: Sue Grafton, Sara Paretsky.
Similar this month: None but try Ian Rankin for crime and Michael Cordy for futuristic stuff.

If you like J D Robb you might also like to read books by Sue Grafton, Sara Paretsky and Linda Howard.

Survivor In Death by J D Robb

'Murder was always an insult, and had been since the first human hand had smashed a stone into the first human skull. But the murder, bloody and brutal, of an entire family in their own home, in there own beds, was a different form of evil.’

On the surface Keelie and Grant Swisher seem unlikely targets for an assassin; an average couple living in a nice neighbourhood and working hard to raise their two kids. But when Eve Dallas is called to a multiple homicide at the Swisher family home, she discovers a blood-bath. The killers breached an elaborate security system, slashed the throat of each victim while they slept and were in and out of the house in less than ten minutes. Bu they did make one mistake. They left a survivor…

Nine-year-old Nixie Swisher’s sudden urge for a midnight snack may just have saved her life. While her parents, brother and best-friend lay in their beds, oblivious to the danger, Nixie was in the kitchen and saw far too much.

Offering Nixie temporary refuge is easy, but dealing with the emotional needs of a nine-year-old girl who has lost everything isn’t. Eve can at least promise Nixie justice, but she’s chasing professionals who don’t like leaving loose ends. And leaving Nixie Swisher alive is one loose end too many…

Whether she writes as J.D. Robb or under her own name, I love Nora Roberts. She is a woman who just doesn't know how to tell a bad story * Stephen King * J.D. Robb's novels are can't miss pleasures * Harlan Coben * Anchored by terrific characters, sudden twists that spin the whole narrative on a dime, and a thrills-to-chills ratio that will raise the hairs of even the most jaded reader, the J.D. Robb books are the epitome of great popular fiction * Dennis Lehane * Gut-searing emotional drama * David Baldacci *
