Sarah Broadhurst's view...

The Roman invasion of Britain with the Brits trying to consolidate an army out of old enemies and tribes who have never trusted each other up against an army with elephants and brilliant tactics. We all know what happened but the telling of it here is thrilling stuff. Good escapism with excellent battle scenes, it follows Caligula with the same slave, Rufus, our hero, but is easily read on its own.

Comparison: Conn Iggulden, Simon Scarrow, Harry Sidebottom.

If you like Douglas Jackson you might also like to read books by Henry Venmore-Rowland, Anthony Riches and Robert Fabbri.

Reviews

What stands out are Jackson's superb battle scenes. I lost myself in the riveting depictions of combat, hoping against hope that somehow the British would prevail... I was gripped from start to finish -- Ben Kane, author of The Forgotten Legion Jackson triumphs... If I were Conn Iggulden or Simon Scarrow, I'd be rather worried by the new Scottish kid on the block * The Scotsman * A master of his discipline rightly hailed as one of the best historical novelists writing today * Daily Express *
