Hearts of Stone

Hearts of Stone

Author: Simon Scarrow Format: Paperback Release Date: 02/06/2016

With a foray into more recent history than Simon Scarrow’s previous novels, the Greek Resistance in World War Two is brought vividly and violently to life in ‘Hearts of Stone’. The prologue set in 1938 highlights three young friends (two Greek and one German) on an archaeological dig, from then on in, the book switches between 2013 and the war years of 1940 and 1943. The three main characters are tossed into a sea of conflict, it feels as though they have little choice in the decisions and actions they take. The writing is quite matter of fact and not overly descriptive, giving the impression of a truthful recounting rather than a work of fiction. The chapters set in 2013 create a natural pause between the tales of the battling friends and also slaps your awareness with how quickly the world moves on, yet stays in many ways exactly the same. This is an action packed novel full of interest, it also contains a hushed stillness and encourages thought and reflection making for a captivating read. ~ Liz Robinson   Click here to see Britannia by the same author.

Britannia

Author: Simon Scarrow Format: Paperback Release Date: 07/04/2016

Marching straight into action, Simon Scarrow has created a wonderfully evocative and energetic addition to the ‘Eagles of the Empire’ series. You could read this as a standalone, however I do recommend starting at the beginning with ‘Under the Eagle’. ‘Britannia’ is the 14th novel, maps, the chain of command and cast list set you up nicely. Set in AD52, Scarrow keeps the intrigue and warfare just galloping along. The honourable Cato and steadfast Macro find themselves yet again, even in the most far flung corner of the empire, smack in the centre of some serious political wrangling. The writing ensures your senses are as aware of the surroundings as your mind. While I’ve always felt in safe hands, Cato and Macro are most definitely in the most precarious of positions, consequently this is edge of your seat reading.   A 'Piece of Passion' from the publisher... 'This is a terrific read from Simon Scarrow, whose Eagles of the Empire novels are regular bestsellers. The setting is western Britannia in the first century AD. Such is the confidence of Rome’s military leaders in the superiority of their army that they are unprepared for the trap the native enemy springs on them, stranding thousands of the best trained soldiers in the world in the wintry mountains far from the safety of their fort. Simon writes very powerfully about courage and cunning, about fighting for survival, about standing by your comrades till the last. This is unmissable for anyone interested in history, the Roman world, or the military escapades of any era.' Click here to see Hearts of Stone by the same author.

Another excellent Macro and Cato adventure.  Having been involved in the political machinations in Rome, the two friends are advised to go (are sent?) to Britain where the fight there is to subdue Caractacus.  He is cleverly avoiding battle by gathering the island’s tribes together.  However there is a plan afoot and a spy to unmask and so the tension mounts.  Great battle scenes, lots of plot and the uncovering of the spy left to the final few pages, this is ace.
