"An engaging historical narrative with thought provoking themes."
Rita is a thirty-two year old seamstress in Antofagasta Chile yearning for independence and a different life than the one expected of the women around her. Rita lives in a turbulent world that sees the end of World War I but an all too familiar division created by the threatening Patriotic League. The story also follows her cousin Julián, who falls for a mine owner’s daughter while campaigning for improved workers rights for miners, and Magdalena, Rita’s best friend who’s troubled marriage leaves her finding solace and scandal with a young priest.
Based around the author’s family history and the history of the time, this is a grounded and authentic historical fiction. Rita is a compassionate and endearing character and as I was reading I was hoping that she would receive her happy ending. The challenges and obstacles that the characters faced are managed with care and a gentle touch while managing to make clear certain parallels to division that we still see today.
I found this an engaging and heartfelt narrative that would appeal to fans of historical fiction. It’s also a proud homage to Rita's story.
