"Intimately focused on one woman both at home and in France during the First World War, this historical saga also features the dramas of community, resilience, and hope."
World War One rears its head in the second historical saga novel in The Rags to Riches Trilogy which began with The Rag Princess. Bestselling author Rosie Goodwin has set these novels in one of the most fascinating periods in history. The title of One Woman’s War announces that Annie, who is now 18, really takes on the starring role.
This novel begins in 1914 and finishes in the early 1920’s, we move between Nuneaton, London, and France. Family and community features strongly, with the brutal aspects of war on the front line and at home being felt.
Central themes include endurance and resilience in difficult times and as well as the war, domestic violence and rape are included. Hope does exist though, as friendships are made and the possibility of a romance dances across the pages.
The wide cast of characters revolving around Annie are interesting, and really do set this period in place. They are everyday people living in extraordinary times, facing struggles head on. Annie herself is someone to care about, her empathy and kindness are much needed attributes in this world of war.
I would recommend this novel and trilogy to those who love to immerse themselves into a historical landscape with human drama at its deeply beating heart. One Woman’s War is an intimate and multi-generational tale of community and survival during the First World War.
