Devils in Paradise has all the feel of a traditional PI mystery. Set in a scorching LA in October 1946, investigators Kit Comfort and Henry Richman have been tasked with tracking down a rare signed first edition of a Jules Verne novel, thought to have gone missing with their client’s assistant Marlene.

As their search progresses, with the girl and the book remaining stubbornly elusive, they realise they aren’t the only ones on the hunt, and there might be more to this case than a lost book. I liked the atmosphere of this book. I think the author has done well to create a classic feeling detective story and the way that the historical context and political climate adds dimensions and brings the story to life demonstrates the research that’s gone into getting the setting of the story right.

I liked Kit and Henry, and the other secondary characters that are introduced. I am intrigued by who Luca is and Kit’s relationship with him and with Agent Burke. Devils in Paradise is the third in the Comfort & Company series and though the case itself can be read as a standalone, I like to follow the wider characters’ journey and read the initial introduction of the characters so I would recommend heading back and starting with After the Blue, Blue Rain.

Throughout the book there are references to the events of a previous case which will make more sense to readers of the rest of the series although it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story. Like any great mystery there are twists and turns throughout the plot. The journey to the final scenes kept me entertained and keen to see what the outcome would be.

This would be a great recommendation for readers looking for a classic American detective mystery.

Moreover, the Russians are involved, and it’s 1946.A.D. Price’s DEVILS IN PARADISE is steeped in mystery. What is in the missing book, and why does Marlene matter so much? Where are they, even?
