"The course of true love never is an easy ride, and when you add World War II into the mix, it gets even more complicated."
Take one young woman working in the Air Ambulance Service, add a dashing pilot, multiply it by many complications and misunderstandings, and it all equals a beguiling love story set in World War II.
Courage for the Flying Nightingales by Vicky Beeby follows the story of nursing orderly Ruby Morris, who volunteers for the Air Ambulance Service during World War II. Ruby, a nursing school dropout for reasons that become clear late in the novel, doesn’t fear the flying, but the responsibility. She finds herself falling for one of the air ambulance pilots, Flight Sergeant Laurie Foster, who has secrets of his own.
The World War II details are well drawn and clearly impeccably researched. Bomb shelters, poison pen letters, war rations and even the Battle of Dunkirk all play key roles in the plot.
Beeby knows this period well, as this is her tenth book taking place during World War II. It is the first in the series following the “Flying Nightingales,” which is the nickname for the nursing orderlies working in the Air Ambulance Service. Beeby has also authored books following the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, the Wrens and the Bomber Command Girls.
The plot flies and the characters are well grounded (sorry, not sorry) in this historical saga. The combination of medical emergencies and kind-hearted nurses makes this a perfect novel for any Call the Midwife fans who fancy a sortie into World War II.

A nursing orderly in the WAAF, Ruby Morris is keen to stick with her friends, Holly and Meg, when they volunteer for the air ambulance, and soon all three are moved to RAF Starsden on the outskirts of London.
