The Younger Woman

LoveReading Says

Two perspectives and two timelines ensure this domestic thriller simmers with tension and suspense. After dropping her youngest at university Gabby confronts her hatred of her husband during a hazy drunken evening after she is approached by an unknown young woman. Author Cate Ray has created a plot which burns slowly, consuming secrets and lies before the fiery ending.

I felt as though I was being allowed to consider, to put the pieces together before certain aspects were revealed and yet I still wasn’t sure where the ending would take me. The writing allows you to immediately fall into the switch between the two perspectives of Gabby and Ellis as the chapters change.

The differences are stark, bringing into play the feelings each women evoked in me. The women in this book are the main players, yet Fred sits at the crossroads and it was interesting to see how his story played out. The setting was clear to me, I could picture the locations in my minds eye and Gabby’s house takes on a role as a character in terms of its emotional meaning.

I was always on edge, working out the why’s, what’s, when’s, as the earlier time frame fed information to fan the flames. Sly manipulation and startling revelations run rampant through this domestic thriller, ensuring The Younger Woman is as unsettling as it is entertaining.
