Oh what fun! This captivating police procedural, while based in the future, concentrates on the characters, their relationships, and the solving of a murder. For fans, this is the 62nd book in the futuristic crime series (set later in this century), and you will recognise a returning character from the past.
This was my first time dropping into In Death and as with all good series I was able to read it as a standalone. Gloriously wonderful hats off to the author to have written this many books featuring detective Eve Dallas and to keep the 62nd feeling so joyously readable. Naked in Death, the first in the series was published in 1995 (just before the smartphone era), bearing in mind it is set in the near future, author J.D.
Robb (Nora Roberts) did a pretty good job of predicting what was to come and it feels as though she had great fun! There is a Q&A at the end, and she explains that some of her speculations are now superseded by reality, but she sticks to the rules of the world she has created. Lt. Eve Dallas and her husband Roarke lead the way, their relationship creates sparks and most definitely stars along side the investigation of the crime.
The billionaire lifestyle is highly entertaining, as is the crook turned good guy and police officer partnership. I would imagine that any newcomers will want to head back to the beginning to see how the relationship develops. The crime and investigation is intriguing, and works well in this setting.
As you head towards the ending the action ramps up, and I found the conclusion to be oh-so satisfying. Stimulating and rewarding, Stolen in Death is a highly entertaining futuristic police procedural with attitude.
