"A fabulously creative and entertaining hardboiled crime fiction mixed science fiction and fantasy novel with a genetically-engineered racoon private investigator as the protagonist."
Imagine a pumped up bio-punk Watership Down with an almost down but not quite out freelance investigating racoon as the central character and you nearly have Green City Wars. The animals range from pigeons to weasels to mice and squirrels, all living as a social underclass hidden from humanity. As a freelancer on the edge Skotch the racoon has no option than to investigate a missing mouse, and soon realises the case has much wider consequences.
Award-winning Adrian Tchaikovsky is one of my favourite authors for his sheer inventiveness and ability to point out the ridiculous nature of humanity. The world building here is fabulous, I was able to visualise this green solar-powered world with ease. The characters could come straight out of hardboiled crime story, with the cynical PI racoon, femme fatal weasel assassin, plucky pigeon, and a whole host of corrupt and crooked in a world for which they may have been genetically engineered but certainly weren’t ready for.
If you love crime, and science fiction and fantasy, then step right up and grab your popcorn along the way. I was invested and I loved it, so this sits as a Liz Pick of the Month and LoveReading Star Book. Green City Wars is a fabulously entertaining, thought-provoking hardboiled SFF mash-up where the underworld of genetically-engineered animals fight for survival while the humans remain oblivious.

In a city of sunshine and secrets, the shadows belong to the animals. One genetically-engineered raccoon races to expose a deadly conspiracy – before it tears his whole world apart.
