A beautifully challenging novel, it almost hurts when you realise one mind has created this simply immense story. The Dark Forest is the second in the Three-Body Trilogy which started with LoveReading Star Book The Three Body Problem. An alien life force are on their way to earth, and they are due to arrive in four centuries time. In their communications with earth they have realised the human ability to lie and deceive and so confirm their need to eradicate human life. In this novel, earth begins the Wallfacer Project, where four individuals are given almost unlimited power in an attempt to outwit the Trisolarians. Author Cixin Liu is so creatively provocative, I love his work, and in particular his ability to take you into an individual life while opening up the universe. I always find my own thought processes expanding even as I find myself being carried away by the plot. Again the translation is just fabulous, and allows you to simply sink into this tale. Luo Ji is chosen as a Wallfacer, the intricacy of his life and his decisions is described so you can join and feel his emotions. The focus remains firmly on Luo Ji as the swirl of history and the countdown of time ensures a sense of inevitability and tension. It really does feel as though you have a vision of the future, and so this novel joins its sister as a LoveReading Star Book. Highly recommended, The Dark Forest is a wonderfully stimulating novel, it opens up the stars and yet is as intimate as can be.
Read the award-winning, critically acclaimed, multi-million-copy-selling science-fiction phenomenon - now a Netflix Original Series from the creators of Game of Thrones.
Imagine the universe as a forest, patrolled by numberless and nameless predators. In this forest, stealth is survival - any civilisation that reveals its location is prey.
Earth has. Now the predators are coming.
Crossing light years, the Trisolarians will reach Earth in four centuries' time. But the sophons, their extra-dimensional agents and saboteurs, are already here. Only the individual human mind remains immune to their influence.
This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a last-ditch defence that grants four individuals almost absolute power to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection from human and alien alike. Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists, but the fourth is a total unknown.
Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer, is baffled by his new status. All he knows is that he's the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead.
