On the night of her ninth birthday, Cherry was there when her mother and brother were killed, and her father was subsequently jailed for their murders. After being brought up by her aunt and uncle in West Wales, she’s forged a career as a freelance journalist in Bristol, with a special interest in domestic abuse and the complex realm of family courts.

Just as Cherry randomly meets a woman whose case of domestic abuse and ensuing fight to protect her children captures her attention, she receives a letter from her father — he wants to meet her, which throws her into disarray, and compels her to read up on her family tragedy. 

In her day job, Cherry has to keep an open mind about both parties. In her personal investigation, she realises not everything was exactly as she remembered. In both situations, Between the Lies is powerful on the dissonance between instinct and truth, the complexities of memory, and what makes a reliable witness. In short, it’s an out-and-out page-turner.
