"Riders, we defy you to keep your seats as we set off for a thunderous return to Basgiath War College."
We’re now on the third instalment of the Empyrean series, which had the book world clamouring for Fourth Wing and led us on with an almighty cliffhanger in Iron Flame. If you haven’t read either of these books, do. Definitely read them before picking up Onyx Storm, but also just read them anyway - they’re wonderfully all-consuming, I haven’t been this in love with a book series since I was a teen and they are my go-to book recommendations. On picking up the first two books, I was not of this world until I finished. The exact same thing happened with Onyx Storm, it has not been a productive week (apologies to all people I was supposed to be emailing when I was sneaking in an extra chapter at my desk). We knew we were going to be in for a turbulent flight and with the series set to be five books long, I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that we would need a very powerful farsight signet to spot any chance of a resolution on the horizon. If Iron Flame’s cliffhanger was a crevasse, Onyx Storm’s is a precipice.
Rebecca Yarros honed her craft with contemporary romance, so she of course excels at crafting the intimate moments and spice in this romantasy series. The chemistry between Xaden and Violet is already well established and continues to burn dragon-fire hot. But boy can she write expansive worlds, politics, action, fantasy and peril too and Onyx Storm continues to deliver all of the above in abundance. We follow Violet and her squad in search for answers to save those she loves. Ridoc was my personal highlight, his wit was a much needed beacon of light in the darkness that settled over Navarre. I will forever crow from the rooftops about this series and I will now be unavailable for the foreseeable future as I continue to break my own heart by diving head first into all the analysis, theories and discussions online about that ending and what could be lying in wait for us in the rest of the series.

ARE YOU READY TO BRAVE THE DARK?
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there's no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it's impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves - her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.
They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find - the truth.
But a storm is coming... and not everyone can survive its wrath.
