LoveReading Says
We learnt from reading Fourth Wing that boy, oh boy Rebecca Yarros does not pull her punches. And Malek, Dunne or whatever gods you feel like praying to aren’t going to protect you in Iron Flame either.
Following the dramatic sheer cliff-face that was the ending of Fourth Wing, we were left on tenterhooks about what on earth could happen next. Iron Flame is one hell of a terrifying roller coaster ride. Violet knows the truth that’s been kept hidden for centuries, and now she has secrets to keep from friends and foes, gas lighting professors, sadistic leadership out for blood, oh and classes this year that are deadlier than last in a war college that never relents. I was over the moon to reunite with my favourite grumpy old dragon and possibly favourite character ever, Tairn, and a newly adolescent and incredibly snarky Andarna. The chemistry between Violet and Xaden is served at the perfect temperature - sizzling hot - although their relationship is far from smooth sailing.
After trying to drag this book out and stay in this world for as long as humanly possible (the longer it takes to read, the less time to wait until the next book is out) I was reading late into the night to finish it and the ending left me stunned. I’m writing this after a restless night’s sleep and a few hours of ruminating and I’m struck with the realisation I might be experiencing full-blown grief, not to be too melodramatic. There’s now a numb but gnawing Iron Flame sized pit in my soul and if you need me I’ll be screaming into the abyss until we have news about book three and the series can continue.
