"A moody, intense romantasy tale of revenge as a slain princess seeks to reclaim her throne with the help of a death god."
From the start of The Deathless One we are thrown into a realm with a deadly plague and a Princess who will do anything, even dabble in forbidden witchcraft, to protect her people. To that end, a strategic marriage barely starts as Jessamine’s throat is cut at the altar, sending her straight into the path of the Deathless One, the only god remaining, who senses how powerful she is and will do whatever it takes to be free in the world once more.
Starting with one of the most enticing first sentences I’ve read for a while, it sets the scene for a faithless, deteriorated realm before introducing our relentless heroine, Jessamine. Her connection to the Deathless One through her resurrection brings an instant spark of desire between them that comes to a boil over the course of the book. Although the fight to claim her kingdom may be noble, our main characters also bring out the worst in each other, meaning this Romantasy is slightly on the darker side and has some interesting potential. They’re heading for the throne but what kind of rulers will they be once they get there?
The first in the Gravesinger series, there’s more to uncover about the plot behind Jessamine’s murder, the fight for her kingdom continues and we wait to see what the Deathless One truly wants to do when he’s free. It promises magic, revenge and perhaps a little bit of chaos in thIs bloodthirsty journey to retake the throne.
Raised to be a leader for her people, when Princess Jessamine's kingdom is overrun by an incurable plague, she does her duty and enters a political marriage to save them all. Too bad her husband's first act is to slit her throat and seize the throne.
But death isn't the end for Jessamine. Her spirit is met by the Deathless One, a god of death yearning to return to the mortal plane - and he needs her help to resurrect him. He senses powerful witchcraft in her frail and broken form, so the two of them make a deal: her life and the return of her kingdom in exchange for his restoration.
Deals with gods are never so straightforward. Deathless One is a dangerous ally - but the longer they spend together, the more Jessamine is drawn to him. Perhaps the more appealing throne is the one by his side...
