I have stamped MUST-READ all over The Secret Hours and even though I finished several days ago I’m still fired-up and smirking like a demon. Mick Herron really does write with the most masterly of pens, whoever gave it to him probably wants it back. If you’ve not yet read the fabulous Slough House series you don’t need to worry (but put it to the top of your ‘to be read’ list right now) as this doesn’t focus on the disgraced unit of spies.
The Monochrome inquiry investigating the British secret service is floundering until a years old file from Berlin unexpectedly finds its way into their hands. What follows is the most deliciously twisty and devious journey into the past, while in the present different players lay down their hands. The writing is sublime as the plot is disclosed and the humour of course, is spot on.
All the characters are placed and played with perfection. My journey into the past was absolute, with a vivid sense of place, and I exclaimed in delight as certain aspects revealed themselves. The Secret Hours goes straight in to my top books of the year, and sits as a LoveReading Star Book and Liz Pick of the Month.
The Secret Hours is to be savoured and to be delighted in as it transports you into the murky world of the secret service. Highly recommended.
