Another good read from Michael Crichton. . He always comes up with a good “what if?” premise and this one is just as thought provoking as his others.

It might take a little bit more effort to get past some of the science speak but once this book gets going its fast action pace sweeps you along to a great finale.

If you like Michael Crichton you might also like to read books by David Gibbins, Richard Morgan and David Gibbins.

Synopsis

Prey by Michael Crichton

In California, odd things are happening to unemployed scientist Jack Forman. His children tell Jack that strange men have visited the house. And Julia, his wife, isn't helping – she acts, even looks, somehow different.

Deep in the Nevada desert, in the laboratory where Julia works, things are out of control. A swarm of rogue microbots, designed to reproduce and learn, is developing with a frightening speed that has the scientists battling to contain it.

Only when Jack is called in to help does he discover the shocking truth – the microbots have been programmed to behave as predators.

And Man is the prey…

Reviews

Praise for PREY: 'One of the most ingenious, inventive thriller writers around ! Prey sees him doing what he does best -- taking the very latest scientific advances and showing us their potentially terrifying underbelly. Another high-concept treat ! written in consummate page-turning style.
Observer

'This is Crichton on top form, preying on our fears about new technology and convincing us that we aren't half as afraid as we should be.'
The Times

'Mixing cutting-edge science with thrills and spills, this is classic Crichton.'
Daily Mirror

'Crichton masterfully maintains the suspense throughout the fast-paced story. Crichton's knack for characterisation, combined with his impeccable research, persuades the reader that the tale is dangerously close to becoming reality -- and therefore ensures that Prey will invade your nightmares for a long time to come.'

About the Author

Michael Crichton

Michael Crichton was a writer and filmmaker, best known as the author of Jurassic Park and the creator of ER. Crichton graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College, received his MD from Harvard Medical School, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, researching public policy with Jacob Bronowski. Crichton's first bestseller, The Andromeda Strain, was published while he was still a medical student. He later worked full time on film and writing. Now one of the most popular writers in the world, his books have been translated into thirty-six languages, and thirteen have been made into films.

He had a lifelong interest in computers. His feature film Westworld was the first to employ computer-generated special effects back in 1973. Crichton's pioneering use of computer programs for film production earned him a Technical Achievement Academy Award in 1995. Crichton has won an Emmy, a Peabody, and a Writer's Guild of America Award for ER. In 2002, a newly discovered ankylosaur was named for him: Crichtonsaurus bohlini.

Michael Crichton died in 2008.
