LoveReading Says
Khalid and Amira are taken away from their well-loved childhood home due to the civil war in Syria. This book comes across as an ode to their childhood, their happy memories and the places they were created, but it is also a pilgrimage through life, how the childhood friends move and grow into adulthood.
A mix of genres, this book focuses on relationships, culture and family as Amira and Khalid’s story develops, and I think this would be a good recommendation for people who like books similar to The Kite Runner- two characters growing and changing with a background of conflict is quite similar. This is also a great way to educate about a very real conflict through the guise of fiction and the use of fictional characters. I didn’t know much about the conflicts in Syria and the backdrop of Khalid and Amira’s story was enlightening.
