"An intense, urgent depiction of fighting against addiction and life on the streets."
An intense, urgent depiction of fighting against addiction and life on the streets. Danny is an addict that even in his own darkest moments still tries his best to help others. This includes Ana, pregnant and homeless, haunted by her experiences of the Bosnian war and in constant danger of violence and exploitation.
Cardboard Citizens is written with a sense of immediacy that puts the reader right in the midst of the story with the characters. This alongside the unflinching realities of addiction, and the hard life of the homeless makes for some intense reading. Danny’s good nature shines like a beacon out of the book not just to the other characters, and his care towards others is warming, if sometimes considered a little naive by others.
Reading the serenity prayer at the end was not only poignant but I felt that Danny’s journey echoed the sentiments within it - helping where he can, accepting what he can’t change and his gradual understanding of the difference. I think that it was a really smart way to end the book because it left me reflecting on what I had just read, through this new guise.
