A fully inclusive guide you can really immerse yourself in. Insight Guides allow you the added extra of downloading an ebook via their app, which adds extra information for the dates of your holiday. These guides allow full research to take place before your trip, they go into lots of detail with in-depth features and the vivid full page pictures allow you to experience what is on offer. These guides can also be coffee table reads, which you can pick up and browse through. I think they are perfect for creating a wish list of places you want to visit. As well as highlighting beautiful locations to travel to, they are jam-packed full of useful tips, snapshots of information, and go into lots of practical detail, so they also make a great guide to take with you too. Simon, Nottingham
Absolutely stunning, these books are incredible and contain not only a wealth of fascinating information but also beautiful photographs that capture the each destination brilliantly. They’re an absolute joy to look through and make a wonderful read even if you aren’t able to visit anytime soon. The depth and breadth of information is wonderful and give you a full grounding of the history of place as well as tips, maps, top attractions and local insight that will really help you get the most out of your trip. An absolute feast for the eyes, the books really celebrate the beauty of the location. Not exactly pocket size but you do also receive an incredibly handy eBook and app with the guide making travelling light a real breeze. Heidi, Sussex
The Insight Guide is twice as big as the Berlitz Pocket Guides. Not particularly handy to take away on holiday, especially if flying. It is more suitable for giving you a flavour of the country. The book is a useful introduction to the area, giving lots of interesting snippets and flavour of what it is like there. The guide is of more use when you are planning a holiday than anything. It has lots of beautiful photographs to browse through and some useful maps of the area. A great guide. Even if you are not going to visit that particular area, it is still an enjoyable read. Rachael, Glasgow
The Insight Guide series are a lovely series of books which would make planning a trip so much easier. They include some stunning photography and useful maps, along with a short history of the area. The books discuss the culture and other relevant information along with easy to read descriptions and ideas of places to visit, including some that are not the obvious tourist attractions. There are many ideas of places to eat and stay although you would need to check these as places close down so quickly in this day and age, and may not be relevant at the time of travel. Although the descriptions are brief they give you an idea of what to expect so that you can find out more if you want to. These insight books are also available online for those with smart phones and tablets who wish to explore them that way. There are around four hundred books in the Insight series which is a comprehensive guide to many areas and places of the world. Glenda, Powys
My first impression of the Insight Guide for Scotland was of how much of a premium product it was. The book has a significant heft to it, the pages are printed on premium, high quality paper and the binding is robust and high quality. The guide is packed with stunning photographs and there are detailed maps throughout. A third of the book is devoted to features, with subjects such as history, culture and the arts and outdoor pursuits, all of which contribute context to the places that are the main feature of the book. There are around 20 pages at the back of the book with travel tips and a helpful 4 pages of "best of" at the start of the book. People used to "Rough Guide" or "Lonely Planet" style guidebooks might be surprised at the lack of information on restaurants and accommodation. This is more than compensated for, however, by featuring this information in the app that accompanies the book. Also, with more travellers now used to combining guidebooks with websites such as Trip Advisor, this is not too much of a loss and gives the book longevity. In brief, this is a good, comprehensive guidebook which will add quite a bit of weight to your rucksack but which won't fall apart. As a nature lover, I think it lacks in that department - a bit more about the geography and geology of the Highlands and Islands would not have gone amiss, and maybe some more information on the best places to spot the stunning wildlife that featured in its beautiful photographs would have been helpful. Overall, I think it's a book designed for the premium rather than budget traveller, but for quality and content, it hits the spot. Ann, Suffolk
This has to be one of the best travel guide series’ I have seen, Not only is it full of beautiful photography it also has clear maps, which pinpoints some of the best places to visit. Each place mentioned has travel tips, where to eat, facts and history. At the start of the book, there are pages dedicated to wine and food, artists, the history of Provence together with a list of the best of attractions. Even if like me, you don't travel, due to heath issues, it is a wonderful read for the armchair traveller, something just to dip into and dream. Angie, Lancashire
This guide straight away looks like a product of good quality which makes me trusting of its content which I think is important when choosing a travel guide. I like the way that the first section it opens with is Top Attractions and Editors picks as often you don’t have time to read the full guide and just want a quick ready reference of where are the best places to go. The book features many beautiful photos which catch your eye when flicking through the book and draw you in to give ideas of places to visit. The Places section is accompanied with a good map making it easy to navigate around the locations and easily see what attractions/places of interest are where. Each individual attraction is tagged with a number which is then shown on the map and the Map’s location is shown at the top of each page which is a very clever idea. The colour coding of the sections is clear and very useful allowing you to easily find the relevant sections. There are also a few blank pages at the back of the book which I think is really handy as you always want to make a few notes of your own! The free addition of a Mobile app and ebook combines the digital element really well as it allows you to use the book to plan and the App to navigate when you’re on location. Overall I find this guide very user friendly and a glossy product. Whilst I think in itself it would be quite large to take with you, I think the combination of the ebook/App makes it traveller friendly. Julie, Co. Donegal
The Insight Guides are beautiful books packed with amazing glossy photos. As soon as I opened one I found myself wanting to visit lots of the places. The Guide has a detailed history and culture section, also including typical food and drink, followed by a places section and travel tips at the back. Under the front cover flap is a map of the country showing the different regions. Under the back flap is a city map. The history and culture section has some really interesting chapters. The places section is organised into chapters on each region. I loved that each region has a detailed map and a box with the main attractions listed and also little boxes each containing a fact or tip. The largest cities also have their own maps. The travel tips contained lots of useful information including transport, climate, health, festivals, etc. I would have liked to see some recommended places to stay and places to eat at the back of each region in the places section. Also, the language section could have been a bit longer to make it more useful when ordering food or shopping. Overall a great series with useful information and amazing photos to entice you into visiting. I can’t help thinking these guides would make a great present for anyone about to make a trip.
