LoveReading View on Born Bad

A gritty, darkly fascinating story set inside two repugnant yet compelling organised crime gangs in Manchester. The O’Briens and the Boddlington gang find themselves at war after Paddy O’Brien, notorious criminal and gang leader is stabbed. As the flames of violent revenge flicker outwards, all hell breaks loose and lives are lost and forever altered. Marnie Riches handles the twisted relationships within this story beautifully, as I got to know these characters, see their lives behind the obvious violence, my thoughts and feelings flickered. There aren't any loveable characters trotting through the pages, instead greed, malevolence, and ruthlessness are set to rampage. Among the darkness, a lightness of touch by Riches, allows an occasional smirk or feeling of sympathy to float free. ‘Born Bad’ unflinchingly stomps it’s way through your awareness, and is an entirely thrilling and captivating read. ~ Liz Robinson

'Reading Born Bad for the first time was a totally immersive experience. Marnie Riches envelops the reader in the criminal underworld of Manchester – and every character is completely, terrifyingly alive, from violent gang leaders to sidekicks with a secret passion for classic fiction. Darkly comic, brutally honest and always razor-sharp, Born Bad explores what it means to be part of the most famous feuding families in the North – a place where only the strongest will survive. Marnie Riches is an incredible talent and we’re so proud to publish her at Avon HarperCollins.' ~ Phoebe Morgan, Editor, AVON HarperCollins

PRAISE FOR MARNIE RICHES PREVIOUS SERIES:

'Fast-paced and enthralling'

Mark Edwards

'A strong, edgy debut that deserves to do well'
Clare Mackintosh

'Raw, brutal and utterly compelling. Riches is an explosive new talent.'
David Mark

'Marnie Riches arrives with a fully formed narrative skill that suggests decades of experience; she's created a wonderfully idiosyncratic heroine, prone to bad judgement, and placed her in an artfully constructed novel that even incorporates cogent discussions of sexuality and gender. Ms Riches is clearly a name to watch!'
BARRY FORSHAW, author of Euro Noir and The Rough Guide to Crime Fiction
