A Killing Winter by Tom Callaghan

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

This is very special, a cut-above the norm and it starts a new series which is really exciting. Our series hero is Inspector Akyl Borobaev, a recently widowed chief of the murder squad in one of the recently freed Balkan states, Kyrgyzstan. He is called to investigate the murder of the Chief of Security’s daughter who has had a dead foetus stuffed into her womb. She was not pregnant. Akyl has his loyalty torn between helping the father get justice and obeying his own chief who has conflicting opinions. Flashbacks to time with his wife, helped by her uncle, a major criminal and assisted by an attractive female security agent, Akyl falls upon a group who control crime in some twenty neighbouring states. With a multi-faceted plot and lots of pace and action, this is an excellent read. Highly recommended.

If you like Tom Callaghan you might also like to read books by Martin Cruz Smith, Tom Rob Smith and William Ryan.

A Killing Winter by Tom Callaghan

'The Kyrgyz winter reminds us that the past is never dead, simply waiting to ambush us around the next corner'. When Inspector Akyl Borubaev of Bishkek Murder Squad arrives at the brutal murder scene of a young woman, all evidence hints at a sadistic serial killer on the hunt for more prey. But when the young woman's father turns out to be a leading government minister, the pressure is on Borubaev to solve the case not only quickly but also quietly, by any means possible. Until more bodies are found...Still in mourning after his wife's recent death, Borubaev descends into Bishkek's brutal underworld, a place where no-one and nothing is as it seems, where everyone is playing for the highest stakes, and where violence is the only solution.
