Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Great story well told and even worth reading a second time. I say this for it does feel a lot like an earlier book only brought up to date to include the ebola crisis and Snowden, the document leaker. It is the third to feature military investigator, John Puller, who seemed to be becoming a Jack Reacher type character but here returns to his CID roots. We begin with John’s brother escaping from prison (you do get background so don’t worry if you’ve not read the earlier books) and John, against regulations, being asked to find him and who planned the escape and why. With plenty of twists, action, emotional complications, dead bodies and pure daring, this is terrific stuff. First rate.

If you like David Baldacci you might also like to read books by James Patterson, Dennis Lehane and Matt Hilton.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Some authors are amazingly prolific, producing sizeable bodies of work in which the standard can – frankly – vary noticeably from book to book. Not so David Baldacci, who seems to produce a book a week (and sizeable ones at that); but his quality control remains unerring, and his various series are remarkably consistent. This is another outing for his special agent John Puller. In The Escape, the Military CID investigator has returned home after a case to discover that his brother Robert, once a major in the United States Air Force (and an expert in nuclear weaponry and security) has escaped from the Army’s most secure prison. He has been serving a sentence for treason, and the preliminary investigation showed that he had help in his escape. At a stroke, he has become the military’s number one target, but the situation presents John Puller with a major problem: family loyalty or loyalty to country?

Synopsis

The Escape by David Baldacci

Military CID investigator John Puller has returned from his latest case to learn that his brother, Robert, once a major in the United States Air Force and an expert in nuclear weaponry and cyber-security, has escaped from the Army's most secure prison. Preliminary investigations show that Robert - convicted of treason - may have had help in his breakout. Now he's on the run, and he's the military's number one target. John Puller has a dilemma. Which comes first: loyalty to his country, or to his brother? Blood is thicker than water, but Robert has state secrets which certain people will kill for. John does not know for sure the true nature of Robert's crimes, nor if he's even guilty. It quickly becomes clear, however, that his brother's responsibilities were powerful and far-reaching. With the help of US intelligence officer Veronica Knox, both brothers move closer to the truth from their opposing directions. As the case begins to force John Puller into a place he thought he'd never be - on the other side of the law - even his skills as an investigator, and his strength as a warrior, might not be enough to save him. Or his brother.

'Zero Day is a nifty, paranoid thriller disguised as a murder mystery, and Baldacci advances it at a speedy clip with a nice mix of intrigue, tantalizing clues and the occasional explosion...Baldacci's books are fast-paced battles between good and evil.' Richmond Times Dispatch on Zero Day
