Aces High by George R. R. Martin, Richard Glyn Jones

Lovereading view...

It’s full steam ahead with the second novel in the ‘Wild Cards’ series; with more action, adventure, and a growing awareness of what’s hurtling towards earth. Again, a number of authors have contributed towards this novel, all aware of the storyline, all adding their own unique zest and zing. It’s 1979 and some of your favourites from ‘Wild Cards 1’ have returned. With slightly more emphasis on what’s beyond our own planet, this still feels as though it could easily be our own reality. Although you can read this as a stand alone story, you will understand so much more of the Wild Card world if you start at the beginning of the series. You do not have to be a science fiction and fantasy buff to enjoy these books, George RR Martin has proven his more mainstream appeal with the ‘Game of Thrones’ TV series. Recommended for anyone who appreciates the unusual and bizarre side of life. ~ Liz Robinson

Synopsis

Aces High by George R. R. Martin, Richard Glyn Jones

30 years after the world changed, the victims of the gene-altering 'Wild Cards' virus face a new nightmare. The place is New York City, home of Aces High - the glamourous lounge for superheroes, high atop the Empire State Building - and Jokertown, the squalid residence of the city's deformed underclass. The victims of the Wild Card Virus are no longer new and strange, but neither are they accepted by a world that still fears them. But as a new decade dawns, all eyes are drawn to the skies, and the Wild Cards may be the planet's only hope. From the far reaches of space comes The Swarm, a deadly menace that could very well destroy the planet. Aces and Jokers must form an uneasy alliance and prepare for a battle they must not lose. Edited by George R. R. Martin, this volume features stories by Roger Zelazny, Walter Jon Williams, Pat Cadigan, Lewis Shiner, John J. Miller, George R. R. Martin himself and more!
