The Farm by Tom Rob Smith

Lovereading view...

Fans of Russian thriller Child 44 and familiar with this author will find this new one very different. It is not a thriller and not what I was expecting at all but I’m very glad I read it. It takes you into the world of the mentally ill and their misunderstanding and delusions of the events around them. You really do not know who or what to believe. Gripping, with the uncertainty of criminal actions, cover-ups and fear surrounding our main character, it unravels a complex tale with some nasty surprises. An excellent read, highly recommended.

If you like Tom Rob Smith you might also like to read books by Robert Wilson, Alan Furst and David Benioff.

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Daniel thought his parents had a comfortable existence on a Swedish farm, until he receives a distressed call from his father, to say his mother has been committed to a mental hospital, but has escaped. Then he receives a second call, this time from his mother, making her way to London and desperate for him to hear her side of the story. Is his mother the victim of a massive conspiracy as she claims? Or was his father right to commit her to an asylum?

Synopsis

The Farm by Tom Rob Smith

If you refuse to believe me, I will no longer consider you my son...Daniel believed that his parents were enjoying a peaceful retirement on a remote farm in Sweden, the country of his mother's birth. But with a single phone call, everything changes. Your mother...she's not well, his father tells him. She's been imagining things - terrible, terrible things. In fact, she has been committed to a mental hospital. Before Daniel can board a plane to Sweden, his mother calls: Everything that man has told you is a lie. I'm not mad...I need the police...Meet me at Heathrow. Daniel is immediately caught between his parents - whom to believe, whom to trust? He becomes his mother's unwilling judge and jury. Presented with a horrific crime, a conspiracy that implicates his own father, Daniel must examine the evidence and decide for himself: who is telling the truth? And he has secrets of his own that for too long he has kept hidden...
