Defy the Night

Defy the Night

Author: Brigid Kemmerer Format: Paperback Release Date: 14/09/2021

Reeling with romance, rebellion and a feverish sense of doing the right thing, Brigid Kemmerer’s Defy the Night melds magic with political struggles to create a fast-paced, fantasy epic fronted by an indomitable young female apothecary.   Tessa Cade and handsome, enigmatic Weston are the Robin Hoods of their corrupt kingdom, a realm that’s brutally governed by King Harristan and his brother Prince Corrick; a realm in which only the richest can afford a cure for the disease that’s blighting their subjects. As a result, Tessa and Weston rob food and medicine from the rich to distribute to the poor, but Tessa is quick to realise that the only long-term way to end this unfair situation is to kill the king. Cue a high-stakes voyage to the kingdom’s dark core and a whole lot of soul-searching, plus plenty of heady romance. With whip-smart world-building and a cast of vibrant characters, this is a novel fans of Sarah J Maas and Cassandra Clare will devour.

A Vow So Bold and Deadly

A Vow So Bold and Deadly

Author: Brigid Kemmerer Format: Paperback Release Date: 26/01/2021

Readers invested in the epic political and romantic entanglements of A Curse So Dark and Lonely and A Heart So Fierce and Broken will not be disappointed by this conclusion to the Cursebreaker fantasy series. What began as an inventive feminist-fuelled riff on Beauty and the Beast has grown its own wings and soared to exhilarating heights. This grand finale undulates with thrills and tension of every kind - political, emotional and romantic - which means its appeal transcends genre boundaries.   With Prince Rhen’s former commander Grey now recognised as prince of Emberfall, two kingdoms teeter in troubled times. In Emberfall, Rhen is now free of his curse and has Harper at his side. But loyalties are divided between him and Grey and Lilith’s lethal magic is omnipresent, able to wreak violent havoc in an instant. The kingdom is crumbling. Meanwhile, over in Syhl Shallow newly-crowned Lia Maria is happily close (very close) to Grey, but struggling to gain the respect of her court and subjects. Then, when Lilith inflicts unthinkable horrors in Rhen’s court, Harper steps up and does the unthinkable herself - she takes a huge risk for the love of her life, and the future of two kingdoms.   Enormously entertaining, and packed with passion and opulent fashion (gowns, boots and buckles galore) alongside potent themes of bravery, loyalty and love, this is a richly satisfying romp.

A Heart So Fierce and Broken

A Heart So Fierce and Broken

Author: Brigid Kemmerer Format: Paperback Release Date: 07/01/2020

This is everything you could ask of a sequel to A Curse So Dark and Lonely, and then some. Readers are returned to the well-formed world of Emberfall and its neighbouring territory of Syhl Shallow, where political ambition and newly revealed secrets threaten Rhen’s crown, and where intriguing new characters take centre stage. Among these is Lia Mara, eldest daughter of Syhl Shallow’s Queen. Lia Mara has been overlooked as heir to the throne in favour of her beautiful younger sister and, in many ways, the driving message of this tale belongs to Lia, a wise, compassionate young woman who’s “used to being underestimated”, but stands her ground in the name of doing the right thing. While Prince Rhen has been freed from the curse of the malevolent enchantress Lilith, his kingdom is now subject to new threats. Rhen’s loyal right hand man, Commander Grey, has gone, assumed dead, and there are rumours that Rhen’s secret half-brother is about to lay claim to the Emberfall throne. In hiding rather than dead, Grey encounters Lia and accompanies her to Syhl Shallow. Handsome and powerful, he would make a fine husband for Lia’s younger sister, but his heart is elsewhere. The enthralling story of political struggle is thrillingly laced with conflicts of the heart - both romantic and familial - to create a satisfying feast of YA fantasy fiction, with a cliff-hanger climax that suggests a yet more explosive third installment is on its way.

Call It What You Want

Author: Brigid Kemmerer Format: Paperback Release Date: 27/06/2019

Rob and Maegan both have a whole lot on their plates. Rob’s rich dad attempted suicide after he was caught embezzling their community and he’s now severely disabled, unable to speak or do anything for himself. Until eight months ago, “Everyone wanted to be me,” but now Rob’s an outcast, tainted by his father’s fraud, which is something Maegan also knows a thing or two about. Previously an academic overachiever, pressures led her to cheat in last year’s exams, which in turn led to hundreds of her peers’ marks being invalidated. Connected by a Calculus project and their dads (Maegan’s cop father was first on the scene when Rob’s dad shot himself), the two outcasts strike up an unlikely friendship, and more. Alongside their romance and the gripping twists, I loved the moving camaraderie between Rob and Owen, whose single mom was thrown into crippling financial hardship by Rob’s dad. For a book that packs-in plenty of big issues, it’s also an entertaining page-turner - the perfect YA package with the overriding messages that “one mistake doesn’t define you”, and “one choice doesn’t determine your whole future.”

A Curse So Dark and Lonely

A Curse So Dark and Lonely

Author: Brigid Kemmerer Format: Paperback Release Date: 29/01/2019

Masterfully melding the contemporary world with a richly evoked fantasy realm, this is a fairy tale re-telling of the finest order. Harper has lived a tough life, what with her mom being sick and her brother forced to take on their absent father’s violent debt collection work. She has cerebral palsy but “can move quickly when I want to”. She’s a fighter too, so when she’s snatched by a stranger and deposited in Ironrose Castle, in the heart of a parallel realm called Emberfall, her captors are thrown off-guard. “Most of the girls Grey drags from her world won’t touch a blade or a bridle,” Prince Rhen observes with admiration. And Rhen has seen plenty of girls in his time. Blighted by a curse inflicted by a spurned enchantress, he’s forever fixed at the age of eighteen until someone truly falls for him. This curse has seen his kingdom all but disintegrate and many die and, if he fails with Harper, Rhen will be “condemned to spend eternity as a monster.” With Harper adamant she’s not going to fall for him and Rhen certain the curse will never be broken, they make a pact: “I’ll help you save your country and you’ll help me get home,” Harper agrees. The road ahead is paved with pulse-quickening perils, alongside Harper’s tortuous conflict between love for her family and doing the right thing in Emberfall, not to mention her growing feelings for Rhen. There’s a tangible frisson between them, but is it love? As time ticks on and the powers of the malevolent enchantress heighten, worlds collide to take the stakes even higher. Replete as it is with romance, relatable coming-of-age conflicts and all-out action, fans of Cassandra Clare, Marissa Meyer and Sarah J. Maas will relish this novel, the first in the Cursebreakers series, and its cliffhanger climax will leave readers aching for the sequel.

More Than We Can Tell

More Than We Can Tell

Author: Brigid Kemmerer Format: Paperback Release Date: 08/03/2018

March 2018 Book of the Month | In a nutshell: gripping YA thriller  |  Two damaged young people are the central characters in this gripping novel.  Rev, who lives with his adopted parents, still bears the scars inflicted by his abusive father, and fears that he may one day meet the man again or, even worse, turn into him.  Em’s homelife is toxic, her parents argue all the time and her mother often attacks Em too. She takes refuge online, but that space stops feeling safe when one of the vile trolls who target her (mostly for being female) tracks her down in real life. Em and Rev meet and become friends, but the tension and dangers to both mount. The suspense is maintained throughout, and Em and Rev are compelling characters. Some scenes will upset readers but it’s a powerful exploration of abuse and recovery. Holly Goldberg Sloan writes equally well about this topic in her YA novel I’ll Be There.
