Hannah Beckerman is a former TV and film producer living in London. The Dead Wife's Handbook is her first novel
A special and beautiful book to fall completely and irretrievably in love with. Audrey can not understand why her two daughters are estranged, or why her granddaughters have never met. She is determined to reunite her family, however at the heart of the problem is a secret that has been kept for 30 years. Either Audrey, Jess, or Lily head each chapter and while travelling forward over several months, they also revisit the past. Hannah Beckerman allows secrets to hover, creating an energy that weaves through the story, suggesting, cajoling, calling to past events. The different view points collide and sometimes splinter, which left my thoughts testing and questioning possibilities. I found such strength and beauty in the characters, I think they will remain with me for some time. If Only I Could Tell You, is a heartbreaking, truly fabulous read, you may well sob, but believe me, it is worth it!
February 2014 Debut of the Month. At the age of 36 Rachel suffers a fatal aneurism leaving her husband, Max, and 6-year old daughter, Ellie, to reshape their lives. The narrative is told through the eyes of dead Rachel above the clouds. She can’t change anything, just watch over the course of two years. She watches the grieving and feels their pain, the mending and feels jealousy, fearful and resentful, but slowly things change for all involved. This is a love story from an interesting perspective. I think we all have feelings of insecurity about how others would cope or change without us. Here those anxieties are very well handled. A lovely read.
Audrey's family has fallen apart. Her two grown-up daughters, Jess and Lily, are estranged, and her two teenage granddaughters have never been allowed to meet. A secret that echoes back thirty years has splintered the family in two, but is also the one thing keeping them connected. As tensions reach breaking point, the irrevocable choice that one of them made all those years ago is about to surface. After years of secrets and silence, how can one broken family find their way back to each other? A life-affirming novel with a twist that will break your heart and an ending that will put it together again.
