Sixteen-year-old Julia Whitmire appeared to have everything: a famous father, a luxurious Manhattan town house, a coveted spot at the elite Casden prep school. When she is found dead in her bathtub, a handwritten suicide note left on her bed, her parents insist that their daughter would never take her own life. But Julias enviable world was more complicated than it seemed. The pressure to excel at Casden was enormous. Abuse of prescription antidepressants and ADHD medication ran rampant among students; an unlabeled bottle of pills in Julias purse suggests she had succumbed to the trend. And a search of Julias computer reveals that in the days leading up to her death she was engaged in a dangerous game of cyberbullying against an unlikely victim. NYPD detective Ellie Hatcher is convinced the case is a suicide, but she knows from personal experience that a loving family can be the last to accept the truth. When the Whitmires use their power to force a criminal investigation, Ellies resistance causes trouble for her both at work and in her personal life. As she is pressured to pursue a case she doesnt believe in, she is pulled into Julias inner circle an eclectic mix of overly precocious teenagers from Manhattans most privileged families as well as street kids from Greenwich Village. But when the target of Julias harassment continues to receive death threats, Ellie is forced to acknowledge that Julia may have learned the hard way that some secrets should never be told.

City of Fear

Author: Alafair Burke Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 19/02/2009

An electrifying thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end, City of Fear is for anyone who loves Tess Gerritsen and Michael Connelly. In a city full of victims, it's murder to choose just one... Fresh-faced student Chelsea Hart spends her final night in New York in an elite nightclub with girlfriends and a fake ID. The next morning she is found murdered, in East River Park her celebrated blonde hair hacked off. NYPD Detective Ellie Hatcher is first on the case and quickly homes in on the city slickers last seen with Chelsea. When a tight case is brought against one of them, the department is elated. But Ellie isn't so sure. Chelsea's murder is eerily similar to three other deaths that occurred a decade ago: the victims were young, female, and in each case, the killer had taken hair as a souvenir. Is Ellie right to have her suspicions, or is she delving too deep into a simple case? Ellie's search for the truth pits her against her fellow cops and places her under the watchful eye of a psychopath, eager to add her to his list...

Dead Connection

Author: Alafair Burke Format: eBook Release Date: 10/07/2007

When two young women are murdered on the streets of New York, exactly one year apart, Detective Ellie Hatcher is called up for a special assignment on the homicide task force. The killer has left behind a clue connecting the two cases to FirstDate.com, a popular online dating service, and Flann McIlroy, an eccentric, publicity-seeking homicide detective, is convinced that only Ellie can help him pursue his terrifying theory: someone is using the lure of the internet and the promise of love to launch a killing spree against the women of New York City. To catch the killer, Ellie must enter a high-tech world of stolen identities where no one is who they appear to be. And for her, the investigation quickly becomes personal. She fits the profile of the victims, and she knows firsthand what pursuing a sociopath can do to a cop - back home in Wichita, Kansas, her own father lost his life trying to catch a notorious serial murderer. When the FirstDate killer begins to mimic the monster who destroyed her father, Ellie knows the game has become personal for him, too. Both hunter and prey, she knows her only choice is to find the killer before he claims his next victim - who could very well be Ellie herself.
