The Lockup Period by Vince Thompson takes us on Mario’s twisty ride into the world of startups and Silicon Valley. Yearning to be a part of the tech crowd, Mario discovers he holds advisory shares in a tech company about to go to market. This is his chance, as long as he, and the company, can make it through the 90-day lock up period without incident.

Then a body is found in the CEOs apartment and Mario is dragged into concealing everything to protect his future. Delving behind the closed office door where secrets are kept, deals are made and appearances are kept above all else, The Lockup Period is a thrilling ride. 

Managing to create a realistic feeling world of tech start-ups, IPOs and companies “going public” in a way that provides enough information for the story, but doesn’t overwhelm readers like me who are unfamiliar with this business world, The Lockup Period creates  a modern world that’s almost Gatsby or Ripley-esque, where the illusion of money, power and status is enough to bring Mario into a world he’s never experienced, and always wants to be a part of.

The countdown to the end of the 90 days, Mario’s worth and debt, a stark demonstration of how things can change and a subtle grounding establishing how big of a risk Mario is taking as his debts rise. Alongside the twisting thriller, the dilemma Mario finds himself in and the ulterior motives of the other investors, this book manages to show how hollow the underbelly of Silicon Valley is.

A world based on valuation, prediction and risk taking. I found Mario to be an endearing if naive main character, battling about whether to do the right thing, but easily led astray with promises of wealth. I liked the journey he goes on throughout the book, stepping into this world then trying to do his part to change it for the better.

In all I thought this was an entertaining thriller that would appeal to financial and tech thriller fans.
