"Great for crime thriller fans looking to enjoy a new series with a dry-humoured, cynical new detective lead."
Pirates buried treasure and brutal murder await in this small town crime thriller. The second book in the Leroy Cutter series sees a former detective, former P.I. Leroy Cutter leaves Detroit behind to reconnect with an old Navy friend in Key West. Arriving after receiving a coded message for support and a lot of history to work through, Leroy doesn’t expect to find himself as the prime suspect in the investigation of a brutal murder. With suspicions and victims on the rise and not quite being able to help himself, Leroy uses his own skills to try and clear his name, discovering the underbelly of drug dealing, contentious real-estate deals and sunken treasure sites along the way. ‘Into the Marrow’ is a well-written crime thriller with a plot as full of ups and downs as a choppy sea. Leroy Cutter has a complex history, and enough character building is provided that I was able to read it as a standalone, having not read book one in the series, The Sinful. I enjoyed Leroy’s self-aware, sarcastic humour dotted throughout. I expect that readers of the first book and already familiar with Cutter’s past will have seen his character fleshed out more in this new addition to the series. I didn’t see the ending coming, the author does well to offer up plenty of red herrings and possible clues for the reader to follow, weaving an intricate thread that had me entertained throughout. Great for crime thriller fans looking to enjoy a new series with a dry-humoured, cynical new detective lead.
