A career criminal has to get used to prison life in his first stint doing bird. Jack London, self-confessed career criminal finds himself in jail doing 3 years for possession of stolen cash after a bank robbery. As he settles in he makes friends and enemies amongst the prison population. London is antagonistic, self-centred and a thoroughly unlikeable main character, just as the author planned.

Prison life as seen through London’s eyes is detailed and well-constructed, fleshed out with a variety of background characters to help or hinder London’s plans. Over the course of the book we start to see some glimmers of self-reflection from our main character but this isn’t a book to read if you’re looking for a full redemption arc.

‘Bird’ by KW Finch is very quick to read, and the settings are brought to life with the author’s descriptions. The book flows well and feels authentic but I’m not sure I fully understood the end goal as there wasn’t a redemption arc or anything that made me empathise or connect with Jack London.

However, this is a crime fiction that has been written from an interesting perspective. I think that anyone who might be looking for an escapist crime read, who wants to perhaps step out of their lives in order to read about unapologetically bad people being bad, could enjoy this one.
