"Segar has taken all the common sense information we already know to be beneficial for children’s development, added other relevant information, and put it together in one impactful book."
Jennie Segar is a mother who has worked as a teacher, tutor, nanny, and governess all over the world. She found it rewarding to nurture young minds. Maximise Your Child’s Performance is the result of her wanting to share this knowledge. It is an interesting and helpful resource. The book is compact and comprehensive and covers several topics. It is filled with practical advice gained from Segar’s own experiences and research. Segar has taken all the common sense information we already know to be beneficial for children’s development, added other relevant information, and put it together in one impactful book. Segar gets straight to the point and reminds caregivers to give consequences in steps and to try to find a way to say “yes” to some part of a request rather than “no” to everything. She briefly discusses educational toys, the usefulness of Karate and Yoga, and the advantages of learning a musical instrument. She also mentions the importance of sharing stories and being creative, the importance of free time, organised activities, and free play. She stresses the importance of good nutrition and good quality sleep. Segar also includes a chapter on technology and its impact and the benefits of animals/pets. There also is an addendum at the back of the book with sentence starters that can be used for creative writing with middle school students. I recommend this book to all carers of young children and anyone interested in maximizing the potential of young minds.
We all want our children to do well in life and achieve their full potential, but what if there was a way to significantly increase your child’s grades at school simply by them participating in a few, fun activities carried out at strategic times on their educational journey? Early on in my career in education, I began to notice that some students seriously outperformed others from similar backgrounds. A pattern emerged - these students seemed to have things in common. Fascinated by the latest research in this area, it became a mission of mine to dig deeper and find out what was going on. My book, Maximise Your Child’s Performance makes it simple and easy for you to benefit from what I discovered… Based on a lifetime’s experience in education and the latest research in 10 key areas, Maximise Your Child’s Performance introduces the reader to activities and routines which can optimise a child’s ‘intelligence’. Areas covered include: Child/carer relationship, Playing music, and how to choose which instrument, Sport, and which sports have the most impact, Impact of sleep and importance of free play, Toys and games to focus on, Reading together, Preparing for creative writing, Useful technology, Pets, and Nutrition which affects cognition.
