Empowering Women in Small-Scale Fisheries for Sustainable Food Systems Synopsis

This workshop presented a joint FAO-Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation project supporting women in small-scale fisheries, particularly in the post-harvest sector, with a view to improving food security and nutrition and promoting gender equality. The workshop highlighted the importance of fish and the small-scale fisheries sector for food security and nutrition, as well as the role of women in fisheries. Women are often marginalized and there is a strong need for their empowerment. The workshop clarified that project activities focus on the use of small pelagic value chains to increase the quantity and quality of fish products for human consumption and trade, and on empowering women in the post-harvest sector as a means to those ends.Among the recommendations made were: raising awareness of the importance of fish in food security and for nutrition, the need to build the capacity of individual women and family enterprises, including on business practices, market-driven product development and literacy; strengthening women's professional organizations; co-developing processing equipment/small- scale infrastructure (including FAO-Thiaroye processing technique ovens); and promoting fish consumption among children.
