"An encouraging, inspiring, and practical alphabetical guide to living your best physical and emotional life as you age."
An easily accessible guide to aging by Dr Miriam Stoppard, who has written this book with humour and spirit as well as compassion and wisdom. While I know that this is aimed at the over 60’s, I believe it is suitable for anyone who is recognising that they are aging and is looking for knowledgeable help and advice to continue to live a positive life. I also think this would be a really useful book for the relatives or friends of older people, to not only help you to recognise that life should be lived, no matter your age, but also how you can offer support if it’s needed. Topics are covered in alphabetical order, and range from arthritis to posture, from masturbation to dating, and from grand-parenting to loneliness. She gives her insight and opinions, and what has worked in her own 88 years. She covers a whole host of items, and in her introduction explains that she sees herself as an active participant in her own life, as needed and valuable, and wants to encourage everyone to be the best they can be. You can dip in and out, or read in order, there is so much support within this book and I loved Z for Zenith, it is such a positive close! Sex, Drugs and Walking Sticks is an inspiring and supportive book, full of tips, advice, and knowledge to improve confidence, to live your best mental and physical health as you age.

“This book is different from most other books on ageing because it’s a reflection on my own health and happiness from the long perspective of my life as a doctor, wife, mother, author, businesswoman, TV presenter, journalist, grandmother and widow, sharing with you the best bits of what I’ve learned has been a stormy one.”
Now, as she approaches her 89th birthday, Dr Miriam turns her attention to an often-overlooked section of society - the over 60s.
Dr Miriam has watched as life for so many in her generation has changed and people are able to live better for longer - something she hopes her advice will help even more people to achieve.
Sex, Drugs and Walking Sticks is a one-stop guide for living well and feeling confident in your older years is a liberating read. It frees you from being what you “ought” to be, to being whatever you like. You’ve earned that freedom.
