"Braver is a feel-good story of vulnerability, friendship and community. It's an easy, heart-warming read that left me with a warm glow."
Braver by Deborah Jenkins is a feel-good story of vulnerability, friendship and community. It's an easy-going read, relatable and real on so many levels, about what it means to be different and what it can take to become accepted. The book sheds light on various darker contemporary themes, from mental health and bullying to trauma and loss. Its astute observations bring the story to life, weaving the diverse characters' lives together with ease, and I found myself rooting for Virginia, Harry and Hazel, and happy endings. The poetic writing is vivid and emotional, painting pictures through words, and every so often the author throws a curveball into the plot, adding more layers and depth to the story and the characters. The church is at the heart of Braver but religion doesn't overpower it - for me, this was a book about sense of community, companionship and that it's often easier to be braver with the support of others than on your own. This heartwarming book left me with a warm glow. Perfect for fans of Eleanor Oliphant, The Rosie Project, and similar.

Hazel has never felt normal. Struggling with OCD and anxiety, she isolates herself from others and sticks to rigid routines in order to cope with everyday life. But when she forms an unlikely friendship with Virginia, a church minister, Hazel begins to venture outside her comfort zone.
Having rebuilt her own life after a traumatic loss, Virginia has become the backbone of her community, caring for those in need and mentoring disadvantaged young people. Yet a shock accusation threatens to unravel everything she has worked for.
Told with warmth, compassion and gentle humour, 'Braver' is an uplifting story about the strength that can be drawn from friendship and community.
