Every single page is to be savoured in this new, economical short crime novel by the author of Drive. A shocking mass grave is discovered on the outskirts of the small, rural town of Willnot and local doctor Lamar Hale finds himself at the centre of the increasing shock waves this originates. The return of a prodigal son, Bobby Lowndes, followed by the FBI, add another level of mystery onto the quiet atmosphere of the sleepy town and when Hale's partner Richard is critically wounded, hard truths have to be confronted.
Warm, eccentric characters and a strong feel for the epiphanies of daily life characterise Sallis and no one writes of the virtues of gentleness like him. In his unspectacular way, this only makes his crime novels more powerful and capable of lingering in the memory longer than many others full of gunshots galore and cardboard villains. All life -and some death - is here.
In the woods outside the town of Willnot, the remains of several people have been discovered, unnerving the community and unsettling Dr. Lamar Hale, the town’s all-purpose general practitioner, surgeon and town conscience.
