I feel as though this book has become a new friend, it welcomed me in, shared good times and some heartbreak too, leaving me hopeful and inspired. Manni moves to the countryside in Spain with his partner Jack, and brother Reuben. Their new home by a river needs a lot of work, and while nature brings wonder and comfort, it can also be somewhat tempestuous.
Manni writes with a heartfelt eloquence, I immediately settled in and enjoyed getting to know him and his family. I particularly enjoyed the way he wrote about his brother and his partner, full of love and positivity he shared joy and tribulation with empathy and honesty. The relationship between these three is both beautiful and rewarding, it made my heart smile.
As well as his own family, we hear about others who visit the farm, village neighbours, and the history too. Manni shares some emotionally challenging times with clarity and compassion, it feels as though in writing this book he may not only be connecting with others but also with himself. Due to its emotional warmth I just had to choose this as both a Liz Pick of the Month and a LoveReading Star Book.
Little Ruins is a heartening and stimulating read, full of kindness even as it visits difficult times. Highly recommended.
