"Explore one thousand icy cold lochs of Scotland alongside the author as she swims, contemplates, and learns to live and become at one within this wonderful landscape."
Oh-so eloquent, this is a book in which to immerse yourself in order to fully discover its inky depths. Author Brigid Lowe writes of her life, and her love of Scotland, nature, and water with sentences that helped me form connections and feel a part of her journey. There are thirty thousand lochs in Scotland, her aim was to swim a thousand, a thousand icy cold restorative plunges.
I entered by her side and felt, simply felt, her words as she charted her life with a pure energy that drew me closer. There are seven sections, each divided into chapters alluring titled, from ‘Flitting to ’Mermaid’ and ‘Blue’, yet there are darker contents waiting within.
Risk, anxiety, and vulnerability, all dwell within these pages. While nature is at the very core of this book, the author says: “Nature will not cure you. It is not your doctor or your mother. It’s only your native land. You can go there to stop hiding and pretending and meet everything that was waiting all along”.
I loved the pull of this book, and have chosen is as both a LoveReading Star Book and Liz Pick of the Month. Shiver welcomes even as it charts the icy cold swims of life taken by the author, it’s wonderful, and I highly recommend exploring its pages.
