With a distinctly foreboding undertone, this novel slides through Irish folklore into Gothic horror. A group of locals bargain, retreat, or fight as evil again surfaces to stalk their island home. I first met author A.M. Shine’s writing in The Watchers and he excels in creating a menacing setting and atmosphere in the face of the unknown.
He makes it feel so believable, so real, and enables your own imagination to twist into the story. I particularly enjoyed the thrill of dread as I slowly walked the path leading towards the unveiling of the embodiment of terror. The inclusion of familiar folklore ensured a feeling of authenticity, of acceptance as the malevolence nears, which only adds to the fear factor.
I felt as though this story almost stood outside of time, as though it could have been a repeating pattern from the past into the future. Grace is one of the characters in the novel and almost serves as an introduction to the island, each new chapter is headed by one of the islanders, and the multiple points of view along with different time spans, ensured I was unsettled and on edge throughout.
There are a number of aspects that are unexplained, creating a claustrophobic energy. As realisation dawned and as the ending neared, it cut deep and left me feeling a mix of emotions. Oh-so creepy and disturbing, Grace is a tension filled, haunting tale of a community facing their greatest fears.
