"British archaeologist Carla James returns to Jericho College in the United States to solve another murder mystery."
British Archaeologist Carla James returns to Jericho College in the United States to solve another murder mystery.
Grave Intent by Sarah Ward features both Jericho College and Carla James for the third time. As the police detective notes, “Jericho has seen a lot of killing in the last year.” It’s anyone’s guess why she would want to return to the site of such mystery and death. (Though it is very difficult to find jobs in higher education these days.)
This time, James has put together a week-long summer course to study burial practices in New England. The course is designed to attract people outside of the usual Jericho College student, and the resulting rag-tag group brings more mystery to the proceedings.
The course begins with bang, with the students discovering a recent murder victim in a shallow grave. The body is buried above the empty grave of Meg Woodruff, a woman rumoured to be a 19th century witch, who is also known as “the Hag of Jericho.” The discovery kicks off an Agatha Christie-like race against the clock to solve the murder before the course finishes at the end of the week.
As with all the best mysteries, there are enough twists and turns in the tale to keep the reader guessing until the very end.
Jericho College is closed for the summer break. But professor Carla James is busy teaching a short course to a small group of archaeology enthusiasts.
Keen to get involved with local history, the newcomers become fixated on the century-old grave of Meg Woodthorpe. Killed for being a witch. A single stone sits on the burial site supposedly to prevent her rising again.
And excavations reveal she may have. Meg's body is no longer there. She has been replaced by a modern victim. With no one missing, Carla must work out who this is and where Meg has gone.
A dark and atmospheric crime thriller. Perfect for fans of Elly Griffiths and Kathy Reichs.
