"DS Jack Warr fights tooth and nail to catch a monster whilst juggling a secret investigation to help his mentor. It's a twisty-turny crime thriller of depravity."
Opening at Euston Station we are introduced to our monster. Acknowledging that awaiting a train for Liverpool had been productive on previous occasions, and navigating a scenario to engage with a single young female, he gets her talking and offers to be her knight in shining armour. Little did she know he was not to be her knight as we get a hint at the horrors that are to come.
I'd not "met" Detective Warr before Pure Evil. Although this is the fourth in the series, it did not prevent me from enjoying the book. He's right up my street. A lone wolf, one helluva detective, with impressive intuition and a great nose for investigation. He's a bit of a loose cannon but you can't help but love him for it and his dogged persistence certainly pays off.
When his friend and mentor DCI Ridley is replaced without warning, Jack won't let it lie. He was working on something that should have been an open and shut case, a young man arrested for assault. Except Jack's spidey-sense was working overtime and he felt the need to dig a little deeper. And he's keen to find out what the hell happened to Ridley.
Pushed to the limits with a tough job, a secret investigation on the side and a demanding family life, Jack is pushed to the brink. Will he solve the cases without cracking and without blurring the lines too dramatically? Will Pure Evil win or will Jack save the day?

It was supposed to be a simple case: a young man arrested for armed assault.
But it was just the beginning.
As Rodney Middleton awaits trial, Detective Jack Warr is warned by his mentor DCI Ridley that they have only scratched the surface of the man's crimes.
Then DCI Ridley is suddenly removed from his post. No one is to contact him - and no one will say why.
As Warr digs into Middleton's past, Ridley calls pleading for help, now accused of a murder he insists he didn't commit.
To catch a monster and exonerate his friend, Warr must weed out the lies. But what awaits Warr if he uncovers the truth?
