Debut author Emily Murdoch tells a deeply moving spellbinding story of a young girl’s courage and survival in a darkly observed contemporary America. Carey’s childhood is hard; she lives in the woods with her mother and her younger sister. There’s little comfort and not much to eat.
Often her mother disappears for several days on end; when that happens, Carey has been told to be sure to keep herself and her younger sister hidden. But then strangers do come by. Carey’s life is about to change forever. She doesn’t seem to have any choice and she doesn’t know what choice to make.
